The Reflecta RPS 10M film scanner is available in our film scanner shop as stand-alone, as well as bundled with SilverFast SE, SE Plus, Ai Studio & Archive Suite. Each film holder has a small arrow indicating the direction of insertion into the scanner. There are also arrows above the slots on the scanner that clearly indicate the insertion direction. The film holder is now pushed into the scanner. The upper slot is for the two KB holders, and the MF holder goes in the lower slot. Depending on whether you are scanning MF (120) or KB (135), you still have to move the focus switch above the slots.

Like all reflecta scanners the DigitDia 7000 is equipped with the manufacturer's software CyberView, which was available in the version X5.16 at the moment of our scanner test. Cyberview offers basic functions to control the scanner including the slide transport and offers a small selection of useful tools for the image optimization.

The scan speed of the reflecta DigitDia 7000

Before starting digitizing the whole slide collection you should make a few test scans to acquaint yourself with the scanner mechanics and to find out which the best adjustments for your film material are. This depends not only on the purpose of use but on your personal liking. It would be very annoying if you realize after hundreds of scans that with some minimal adjustment changes you would have gotten far better image results. Then you would have to think about scanning all pictures again. Lastly, we will go into the possibiliy of generating RAW-Scans in SilverFast. For this matter, there's the Versions SE Archive Suite and Archive Suite. Both variants contain the SilverFast HDR Software in addition to the standard scan software. With all three Variants of te SilverFast Scansoftware, RAW files (which are called HRD in SilverFast) can be generated. In the case of color images, these RAW files will have either 48bit or 64bit, the latter's higher bit depth being due to the fact that they hold the additional infrared channel as well. Each channel has a bit depth of 16Bit - making for a total of 64Bit.

With only one slide is being inserted at once, the necessitiy of index scans is eliminated. Besides that, scanning of framed slides passes off fairly similar to the scanning of film strips. If necessary, a prescan is run, after which software parameters are adjusted, followed by the main scan. The available software parameters depend on the scanning software at hand. Whilst CyberView X is a bit limited in this regard, SilverFast offers a wide range of options. We will delve deeply into the destinction between SilverFast and CyberView X, as well as the qualitative advantages of SilverFast in terms of scan quality, in the chaperts scan software and image quality. Scanning single negatives and positives with the RPS 10M At a scan with the highest possible resolution of 10.000ppi you hardly can recognize the vertical lines of the element 6.4 and the horizontal lines of the element 6.5. According to the USAF resolution chart these lines correspond to resolutions of 4598 dpi and 5161 dpi, respectively. In average this means a resolution of approx. 4880 ppi. This means, that the DigitDia 7000 does not even achieve 50% of the optical resolution given by the manufacturer, which is a bad value. A scan with 4880 ppi results in an image with 6917 x 4611 pixels, i.e. about 31,8 mega pixels and a file size of about 91 MB. With this effective resolution you can make high resolution prints up to about 58 x 39 cm. Wer mit dem Reflecta x66Scan ein normales Urlaubsfoto oder ein Familienbild scannt, erhält einen akzeptablen Scan, weil dabei der Kontrastumfang keine große Rolle spielt. Die Scangeschwindigkeit des Reflecta x66-Scan In the scan of the USAF test chart (image to the left) the horizontal lines of the element 6.3 and the vertical lines of the element 6.4 are still distinguishable. According to our resolution chart, this means an effective resolution of approximately 4300 dpi. Comparing to the appointed 5000 ppi, the Reflecta RPS 10M reaches 86% of it's nominal resolution. The predecessor RPS 7200 yields a mere 3800 ppi (of the appointed 7200), which equals only 53% of the nominal resolution. This means a significant increase in effective resolution as well as a significant percental increase towards the predecessor model. Due to the high efficiency of 86% of the nominal resolution, the image files are not as bloated as they used to be with the RPS 7200.

Looking at the resolution picture on the right side, which has been scanned at a resolution of 10.000 ppi, we can only just see detail in the elements 6.3 respectively 6.4. Thus, the effective resolution of 4300 ppi is not changed when scanning with 10.000 ppi. This gives proof of the fact that the 10 Mille is sheer marketing - it has absolutely nothing to do with engineering. So, what is the reflecta RPS 10M really? It's a 5000ppi scanner, not a 10000ppi one. Hence it should have been named RPS 5, instead.
